How to Clean an Air Fryer Without Ruining the Basket

A dirty air fryer smokes, smells and cooks unevenly. Grease builds up on the basket and heating element, and rough scrubbing can damage the non-stick coating. This guide shows a safe routine that takes about ten minutes. For recipe ideas once it is clean, see air fryer recipes for beginners.

What you need

  • Mild dish soap and warm water
  • Soft sponge or non-scratch cloth
  • Soft brush or old toothbrush
  • Baking soda and a little vinegar for stubborn spots

Step-by-step cleaning

  1. Unplug and cool. Wait until the unit is fully cool before touching anything.
  2. Remove the basket and tray. Soak them in warm soapy water for 10 to 15 minutes.
  3. Wash gently. Use a soft sponge. Avoid steel wool and metal scrubbers, which scratch the coating.
  4. Wipe the inside. Use a damp, well-wrung cloth on the cavity walls. Never pour water inside the main unit.
  5. Clean the heating element. Turn the unit upside down only when cool and wipe the element with a damp cloth or soft brush to lift grease.
  6. Dry fully. Let every part air-dry before reassembling.

Removing sticky or baked-on grease

Make a paste of baking soda and a little water, spread it on the stuck areas and leave it for 15 minutes. Wipe with a soft sponge, then rinse. A cloth lightly dampened with diluted vinegar helps remove odours.

How often should you clean it?

PartHow often
Basket and trayAfter every use
Inside wallsWeekly, or after greasy cooking
Heating elementEvery 2 to 4 weeks
OutsideWhen it looks dirty

What to avoid

  • Abrasive scrubbers and harsh chemical cleaners
  • Soaking the main body or putting it in water
  • Dishwasher use unless the manual says the basket is dishwasher safe
  • Cooking spray on non-stick baskets, which can leave a sticky film over time

FAQ

Why does my air fryer smoke?

Usually leftover grease or very fatty food. Clean the element and tray, and add a splash of water under the basket when cooking fatty meats.

Can I use foil or parchment?

Perforated parchment liners made for air fryers are fine. Never block airflow and never preheat with loose paper inside.
