Crispy french fries and chicken wings in an open air fryer basket

Air Fryer Recipes for Beginners: 7 Easy Meals You Can Make Tonight

An air fryer is only worth owning if you actually use it. The easiest way to build the habit is to start with a few forgiving recipes. This guide gives you seven beginner meals, rough times and temperatures, and the small tricks that make food crisp instead of soggy. If you have not bought one yet, read our air fryer buying guide first.

Before you start: 4 rules that work for every recipe

  • Preheat for 3 to 5 minutes. It gives food a crisp start.
  • Do not overcrowd the basket. Hot air must move around the food. Cook in two batches if needed.
  • Use a little oil. One teaspoon tossed with the food is often enough.
  • Shake or flip halfway. This browns everything evenly.

1. Crispy potato wedges

Cut potatoes into wedges, soak in water for 15 minutes, dry well, then toss with oil, salt and pepper. Cook at about 200°C for 18 to 22 minutes, shaking halfway.

2. Paneer tikka

Marinate paneer cubes and capsicum in curd, ginger-garlic paste, red chilli, turmeric and garam masala for 30 minutes. Cook at about 180°C for 8 to 10 minutes, turning once.

3. Masala chicken drumsticks

Marinate for at least an hour. Cook at about 180°C for 20 to 25 minutes, turning halfway. Check that the thickest part reaches 74°C (165°F) with a thermometer.

4. Veg cutlets or tikki

Shape boiled potato and vegetable mixture into patties, brush lightly with oil, and cook at about 180°C for 10 to 12 minutes, flipping once.

5. Roasted vegetables

Broccoli, cauliflower, carrots and beans all work. Toss with oil and spices and cook at about 190°C for 10 to 15 minutes.

6. Reheated samosas and pakoras

This is where an air fryer shines. Leftovers regain their crunch in 3 to 5 minutes at about 170°C.

7. Banana or apple chips

Slice thinly, brush with a little oil and cook at about 150°C for 15 to 20 minutes, checking often so they do not burn.

Common beginner mistakes

  • Cooking wet food without drying it first, which makes it steam instead of crisp.
  • Using too much batter or loose powder that blows around the basket.
  • Skipping cleaning. Greasy residue causes smoke and smells, so see our guide on how to clean an air fryer.
