5 Simple Ways to Cut Food Waste at Home With Technology

Food waste costs households money and wastes the resources used to grow and transport it. The good news is that a few simple tools and habits can make a real difference.

1. Plan meals with a shared list

A shared notes or grocery app lets everyone in the house see what is planned for the week. Buying only what you will cook is the single most effective way to reduce waste.

2. Track expiry dates

Several apps let you scan or type in items and remind you before they expire. Even a simple calendar reminder for fresh produce works.

3. Store food properly

Airtight containers, vacuum sealers and fridge organisers keep food fresh longer. Keep older items at the front so they are used first.

4. Use your freezer as a pause button

Bread, cooked rice, herbs and overripe fruit all freeze well. Label containers with the date so nothing gets forgotten.

5. Cook with leftovers on purpose

Choose one night a week as a leftovers night. Vegetable scraps can become stock, and stale bread can become croutons or breadcrumbs.

Where technology helps most

Smart fridges are an interesting option, and we looked at one in our post on whether smart refrigerators can reduce food waste. But you do not need expensive gear to start. Planning, storage and a little attention go a long way.
